Knepp Castle, West Sussex

Two geophysical surveys were carried out at Knepp Castle in July 2021 and January 2022 to provide information about the layout of the medieval castle and seek evidence of its purported destruction in the 13th century. The project was funded by a research grant from the Society for Medieval Archaeology, directed by Richard Nevell. The surveys identified several areas of archaeological potential on the slopes of the mound, including the likely remains of buried buildings.

Pevensey Castle, East Sussex

Two geophysical surveys were carried out at Pevensey Castle between 2019 and 2022 to identify the presence and extent of archaeological features within the baileys of the castle. The project was funded by a grant by the International Society for Archaeological Prospection (ISAP). The outer bailey is formed of a Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ fort built at the end of the third century AD. The magnetometry survey there found extensive remains possibly relating to the medieval borough which was established in the 11th century. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey of the outer bailey indicated a potential rectilinear feature which might correspond to a ‘robbed out’ building from the Theodosian era which was identified by previous excavation. GPR survey of the inner bailey was inconclusive.
